Community Angry at Prospect of Possible Post Office Closures
Freshman Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) was reported by Huffington Post for saying he is "the modern day, Harriet Tubman" leading people away from the plantation, which is overseen by "perceived leaders in the black community" as Jesse Jackson who bow to the will of white liberals. In support of his statement West said he was "ready to fight for conservative principles that I believe can help move our community forward."In your opinion, if Harriet Tubman was alive today she would be:Outside the post office Brightwood northwest Washington, a long line of customers waiting in line for stamps, money orders, passport services, direct mail and packages. As customers approach the counter, almost all of them remarked, "Do not close this post office."
A proposal that would close a number of local post offices in the districts of the district that were predominantly black years ago many people were shocked, scared and viewing the move as another sign of gentrification.Looming ominously is the proposal to be launched by Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe to the shutter 2000 to 31,871 branches, maintaining there is no way out, given the deterioration of the agency's financial situation. Critics insist, however, the proposal is shortsighted and misguided since Saturday service is vital for some communities and important for lawyers and marketers. Sister Brown worked for the Post Office for 25 years. "This is all about not trying to pay retirement benefits. It was one of the places where many blacks working in government.Livelihood of my sister is wrapped in his work with the post office. Now it is to end abruptly with no certainty about the future, "said Brown. Just five blocks north of the Walter Reed Medical Center completed operations and transfer of patients, staff and medical staff for the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. The move is leaving merchants and residents wonder how long it will take to revitalize the sector, which depended heavily on staff, outpatients and visitors to attend local businesses.
Staten Island officials prostest postal consolidation plan ...
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island elected officials, flanked by dozens of postal workers outside the Manor Road Post Office yesterday, decried possible consolidation plans that would have the borough’s incoming mail processed off-Island — only to be trucked back again for delivery.
They said it would result in the relocation of 90 Staten Island jobs and reduce the quality of service, currently pegged at a 93.9 percent accuracy rate.
The United States Postal Service — eyeing closures and consolidations nationwide to stem its $8 billion hemorrhage — is weighing having the borough’s incoming mail go to Manhattan or Brooklyn for processing as a cost-cutting measure. But no decision has yet been made, a USPS spokeswoman said.
In 2009, the USPS pulled the borough’s outgoing mail for off-Island processing, and did away with the Staten Island post mark. The demonstration, organized by Local 300 National Postal Mail Handlers Union, protested the Postal Service's plan to conduct an area mail processing (AMP) study for the borough. The AMP study involves a review of mail processing and transportation operations of a postal facility, and could be a pre-curser to consolidating operations into Manhattan or Brooklyn distribution facilities.
Last month, the USPS put the Eltingville Finance Post Office on the possible chopping block, along with thousands of other postal facilities around the country. If it does happen, the closure of Eltingville, which provides window retail services only, would not come before December, the spokeswoman said.
“It’s time to say enough,” said Rep. Michael Grimm, who led the bi-partisan rally. He said trucking Island mail for processing to Brooklyn, which has a 68.2 percent accuracy rate, or to Manhattan, with a 41.2 percent accuracy rate, “makes no sense.”
“One million pieces of mail going to facilities with failing grades?” said Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn). “Why would you close the best — the No. 1 — processing center in the Northeast?”
“Let’s reverse it and move everything here,” said Councilman Vincent Ignizio (R-South Shore).
“An elimination of service?” asked Councilwoman Debi Rose (D-North Shore). “When we are operating at a level of almost-perfection? Why are you taking away from Staten Island?
