In the meantime, it’s getting HOT in here!  The DFW area has experienced record-breaking temperatures this summer and it is HOT, HOT, HOT! And so are the upcoming events at The South Dallas Cultural Center. This internationally acclaimed arts facility has been a force in North Texas for 25 years. And for 25 years, The Center, as it is so lovingly referred to, has produced a plethora of hot art exhibits, theater productions, jazz concerts and children programs. The Center just wrapped up its 14th Summer Arts At The Center (SAAC) Program for students ages 4 through 17 years old. The 2011 theme was The Harlem Renaissance: Rediscovering Africa. The curriculum provided students a wealth of opportunities to learn about the artists and cultural workers that forever changed the American arts scene from 1920 through 1940. From Langston Hughes to Duke Ellington to the Nicholas Brothers and Augusta Savage, the children wrote, sang, danced and painted using the aesthetic of the Renaissance as the motivation for their work. They learned that Hip Hop had much of its roots in a movement that reconnected African Americans with Africa: its beats, its rhythms, its designs. The four week program allowed students to work with professional artists to master techniques and develop ideas around the Harlem Renaissance icons. It proved to be both exciting and instructive as parents enjoyed the final presentation that fused all the different arts disciplines.
