'Journey of Hope' travels through North Carolina

Poplin, from the Thurmond community, and his friends revitalized a chapter of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, which had been deactivated at UNC since 2005. Poplin, the chapter’s president, said they began with three members and now have 87 members. Six other members of Poplin’s fraternity chapter have been present with him on the “Journey of Hope.” “Cycling has been the best communication vehicle for the organization, taking to the roads of America and spreading a message of acceptance and understanding for people with disabilities to millions of people through special events and media,” the Push America website states. “Our cycling events raise over $500,000 every summer to build hope for the future of people with disabilities while developing tomorrow’s leaders.” “We’re passionate about Push America,” Poplin said in a recent interview. “We’re passionate about showing what Pi Kappa Phi cares about, and that is about making a difference because that’s what brotherhood, when in its most potent and its most powerful form, does. It makes a difference in lives of both the brothers and also the community around them. And that’s the real mission of Push America…to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities that we serve every day.” “I thought that was really true,” Poplin said. “Believing that if one has the opportunity to lead an exceptional life, he has no right to keep it to himself, I will be one of those adventurous individuals starting in sunny California, transitioning to the arid heat of the desert of Arizona, crossing into the great state of Texas, up through the South, cutting through Chapel Hill, and finally arriving at the Capitol steps in Washington, D.C."There is a girl named Amy, who lives in Santa Barbara, and I was lucky enough to spend the whole day on a day off to Santa Barbara to teach him to ride a bike," he said. "She has Down syndrome, and had some basics down when we got there, but I have to help him lose the drive wheels. We were walking in the gym and standing at the back of the handlebar. When we finally moved to the parking lot and took the first loop without assistance around the parking lot, she jumped off the bike and she ran and gave me this race-high five hug.
