IAR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Danny McBride talks '30 Minutes or Less'

Actor/comedian Danny McBride has made a career of playing obnoxious, self-absorbed, and dim-witted characters in a string of successful projects. He first hit the scene in 2006 with the independent comedy The Foot First Way , which he also co-wrote. Since then he has portrayed his trademark type of role in such movies as Hot Rod , Pineapple Express , Tropic Thunder , Observe and Report , and Your Highness . But McBride is probably best know for creating the character of former major league baseball pitcher Kenny Powers on the hit HBO series Eastbound & Down . Now, McBride returns to the big screen with an all-new character that is sure to make fans laugh in the new film 30 Minutes or Less , which opens in theaters on August 12

In the movie McBride plays Dwayne, an arrogant idiot who along with his goofball pal Travis ( Nick Swardson ), hires an assassin named Chongo ( Michael Pena ) to kill his wealthy father ( Fred Ward ) so they can collect the money and fulfill their dreams of owning a chain of erotic tanning salons. There’s only one problem: they don’t have the money to pay Chongo for the hit. So the two bumbling buddies decide to kidnap a pizza delivery guy ( Jessie Eisenberg ), strap a bomb to his chest and force him and his best friend ( Aziz Ansar i ) to rob a bank for them. The film is a loving nod to the classic action films of the ‘80s and ‘90s like Die Hard , Lethal Weapon , and Point Break and was directed by Zombieland ’s Ruben Fleischer .

Danny McBride: Yes. I do seem to like comedies that push boundaries. Whether that's pushing the boundaries of decency and taste, or pushing the boundaries of a genre and finding a comedic tangle on it. That's what I like about Tropic Thunder , Pineapple Express , and 30 Minutes or Less , they're not just stories about guys trying to lose their virginity or get over a broken heart. They’re movies that rely on the dynamics of the different actors but they also push a story that has excitement and adventure in it too.

McBride:  I just feel with comedy, that's where you do push the boundaries. It should be in comedy. It's all about making dirty jokes, filthy jokes or offensive jokes. I feel like that is the place to do those things and I think it's funny. I think it's cool for people to just loosen up and laugh at things they shouldn't laugh at and feel the merits of laughing at things that they're surprised they're laughing at. I just think that's all part of the experience of the wild comedy. It's unexpected and at the same time you unexpectedly can be laughing at things that you're normally appalled by in real life.
