My Car Won't Start - Now What? AAA Offers Advice to Stranded Drivers

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Many Americans rely on their cars for nearly every part of their life—to commute to work, to attend school, to run errands, to socialize with friends or to get away on vacation. AAA recognizes one of the most stressful things that can happen to a driver is to suddenly have their car not work.

"Whether sitting in your driveway or stranded on the roadside, having a car that won't start is a nerve-racking experience. There are a few things to remember that can help keep you safe and may you return to the heat faster, "said that if a car had previously been working and suddenly does not start, it might be a problem with the vehicle battery. Although in many cases it could be released, in others it is possible that the problem is a bad connection that can be easily determined.

Open the hood and inspect the battery. Make sure it is securely fastened in place, and check the tightness of the cable connected to the battery. If they are loose or covered corrosive construction, which could be the problem. Clean any corrosion from the battery terminals and cable clamps, and ensure the clamps are tight enough that they will not move.

If a poor battery connection does not seem to be the problem, check a few other basic items such as ensuring the vehicle (if an automatic transmission) is fully in park. Also, make sure there is fuel in the car.

If those items do not seem to be the source of the problem, then it's time to call a road service provider, such as AAA, that has knowledgeable technicians to assist. As the nation's largest motor club, AAA trains its roadside technicians to diagnose common vehicle problems onsite, as a result, they are able to get three out of five cars on the go, eliminating the need for a tow.

What If It Strands Me On A Roadway? "If a vehicle begins to experience problems while being driven or suddenly can no longer be driven, safety should become the driver's first priority," said Nielsen.

If the car is clearly experiencing a problem but can still be driven a short distance, drive to a safe location such as a parking lot. If the vehicle stops running but still has coasting momentum, guide it to the far right shoulder, as far off the road as possible while remaining on level ground. Turn on the emergency flashers to alert other motorists.

If the car cannot get completely off the roadway, switch on the safety/emergency flashers and consider leaving the vehicle and moving to a safer location. Occupants should not remain in a vehicle if there is a possibility it may be struck from behind by other traffic. For the same reason, it is generally not a good idea to attempt to push the car off the road.

Safety experts agree that under most circumstances, provided the car is away from the flow of traffic, it is safest for the driver and passengers to remain in the vehicle while waiting for law enforcement or roadside assistance to arrive.

When an 81 Year Old Driver Kills An 84 Year Old Cyclist, Why Do ...

This gets personal. My late father told me that he hoped he didn’t live to be 80 because they would take his licence, and he thought his freedom, away. Unfortunately he got his wish. At that time, drivers had to get retested at 80; then Ontario Premier Mike Harris (who I still blame for everything that is wrong in the world) changed the rules so that they only had to do an eye test and a short written exam, ensuring that the Conservative Party got the seniors’ vote forever.

My mom loved her little Echo and the freedom to drop into a store or an art gallery, or go out to a restaurant with her friends. She was a terrible driver, but if we ever suggested that she hang up the keys, she would threaten to disown us, there was no talking to her about it.

Last year at age 92 she sideswiped a BMW, which triggered a requirement for a drivers test, including a highway drive. She took the eye test and failed; got new glasses and took it again and passed. She took the written test and failed; studied some more and passed. She practiced on the highway with me in the car; I nearly died of fright. She took the driving test and failed, so badly that they took her licence away on the spot. She spent last summer with driving instructors and tried again, failed, and finally got the message. We were so relieved; she was an accident waiting to happen.

So this is a roundabout way of asking, why, when an 84 year old cyclist is killed by an 81 year old driver, why do the media complain that the cyclist was not wearing a helmet and that there should need testing and licences for cyclists, but there is not a peep about mandatory testing of 80 year old drivers?

According to USA Today:

Fatality rates for drivers begin to climb after age 65, according to a recent study by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, based on data from 1999-2004. From ages 75 to 84, the rate of about three deaths per 100 million miles driven is equal to the death rate of teenage drivers. For drivers 85 and older, the fatality rate skyrockets to nearly four times higher than that for teens.

And yet when an 81 year old driver kills an 84 year old cyclist, everyone blames the victim and demands bike licensing and there is not a peep, anywhere, about whether 81 year old drivers should be relicenced. Why is there this disconnect?
