Two 9/11 memorial events planned

The 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States Sept. 11, 2001 will be remembered with two events in Anoka County Sunday, Sept. 11.

For the fifth year, there will be a memorial event from sunrise to sundown on the Main Street bridge over Highway 10 in Coon Rapids.

But the coordinator of the annual Day of Remembrance and Honor, Dan Hanson, a truck driver for Anoka-Hennepin School District 11, has brought together a group of people to  present a 9/11 anniversary observance on the Coon Rapids High School football field at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

“The bridge event will go on as usual, but with the 10th anniversary of 9/11 we wanted to do something bigger,” Hanson said.

A 9/11 planning committee was organized to find a location for the anniversary event and plan it.

Initially, it was thought that the Lowe’s parking lot adjacent to the bridge might be a good location, but traffic concerns ruled out that site, Hanson said.

According to Hanson,  Coon Rapids High School was suggested and he and Capt. Ken Boelter, Coon Rapids Fire Department, met with Principal Jeff McGonigal early this year and were given the green light for the anniversary observance on the football field.

Once the location was in place, “everything just sort of snowballed and came together,” Hanson said.

The high school has been great to work with, he said.

Indeed, the Coon Rapids High School band, orchestra and choir will all be taking part in the observance, Hanson said.

The observance, scheduled to last about an hour, will include a flyover by a C-130 aircraft, plus color guards from the military, Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and VFW and Legion posts.

There will be speakers, including Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and the brother of one of the victims of 9/11, Hanson said.

“We are also hoping that Gov. Mark Dayton will be able to come and speak,” he said.

Coon Rapids Mayor Tim Howe will be the emcee and bagpipers will perform “Amazing Grace” to close the service.

Plans are to have a meet and greet after the hour-long ceremony and give members of the public a chance to view the static display of military equipment, which will be set up in the school parking lot in front of the football stadium and tennis courts.

Also on display at the high school field will be a steel beam from the World Trade Center obtained by the Coon Rapids Fire Department.
