Jericho Partnership Warmed Hearts By Distributing Clothing
On Saturday, 148 families received clothing that was donated by people in Danbury and other local towns. “People drop off clothing at 13 Rose Street, and we have to make sure it's good clothing,” said Crystal Perkins who oversees operations, is the volunteer manager, and also runs Compass Care, which organizes projects for people who need help.
“We always need more boys and men's clothing,” said Alice Mayer, described as Star Volunteer by Perkins. “There are people in the community who need clothing and can't afford it. At 8:30 this morning, the line was out the door, down the sidewalk, and out to the road.”
Mayer started volunteering for the Jericho Partnership in February of this year. “It keeps me out of trouble,” she laughed. “I organize, sort by size and men's and women's, so it's easy work, and it's quiet.”
The clothing is kept in storage rooms, one for unsorted, and the other for sorted. The tables can hold about 30 pounds of clothing. “Thirty pounds of clothing times nineteen tables, it's a lot of clothing! The piles were so high this morning when we started, and they are down to almost nothing.”
Volunteers from the Emmanuel Lutheran Church were on hand to help out at the Christmas in August event. “This is our first time helping out here,” said Meghan Hollrah, 16. “I really enjoyed helping people who asked questions.”
There were also volunteers from the Massachusetts North River Community Church who came down to serve Danbury by painting rooms for the Jericho Partnership, and helped to sort and prepare the tables with clothes. They also worked at the Dorothy Day House and did street cleaning. Caitlyn Davidson said, “We picked up trash, and it was really cool. We did one side of the road and when we crossed over to the other side, we could see what a difference we had made.”
Haley Harvey's favorite activity had been to bring cookies to a senior center. “They were so cute and really nice people. I really like the elderly.”
Perkins said there is always a need for volunteers. “People can serve with the Back to School BackPack Bash. We will be distributing 300 backpacks. We are also accepting supplies for backpacks until August 15.”
“There will be a Christmas in October Event, and we need things like socks and underwear, and in our shelter we need bottled water, travel size shampoos and toothbrush and toothpaste. We also need men's winter clothing and of course, we welcome donations. We always need volunteers, we need male mentors and reading partners. We are looking for mature men whose beliefs are in line with our own. We partner with twenty-one churches, and it is a Christian Mentoring Program,” said Perkins.
