Q&A: Mini cooper transmission swap from auto to manual..how hard ...

I found a 2002 mini cooper for sale with a broken transmission..problem is it’s an auto..I’m a sporty girl and I love my manual cars..so I was wondering just how much it would be to swap it..how much work would have to be done and how much you think it’d cost on average..just a guess please..i’d have to buy a transmission and it seems like they cost about the same, manual or auto.. You would be better off just buying a manual car. In order to swap that out, you’d be looking at changing not only the transmission, but the pedal assembly, console and shifter components, wiring harnesses, computer(s), possibly driveshafts, possibly instrument cluster, as well as various small parts like brackets, etc. You would have to cap off and remove cooler lines, and install the clutch hydraulics, if any. In short, you would need a complete donor car, which makes the whole project moot. On top of that, it’s probably illegal in some places.

It’d be a bunch cheaper (read thousands less) just to buy one with a stick in the first place. Shot in the dark guess at how much the labor will be for the conversion . . . $ 4,000 + gearbox and clutch. It’s a lot more work than just throwing an extra pedal in.

Secondarily, after you’ve spent all of that extra money, you’ve actually decreased the value of the car with what BMW/mini and general consumers would consider a downgrade.
