Local and area managers and companies involved in the auto trade were cited recently for online programs, low-polluting innovations and classic restorations.

Schools show spirit in dealers’ Facebook drive

Here’s a Dorchester County high school showdown that’s not on the football field. Instead, it’s to help determine who is most enthusiastic.

Through last week, Fort Dorchester High School is first and Summerville High second in Hendrick Auto Group Charleston’s Facebook “drive” for the 2011 Sertoma Football Classic’s School Spirit Award. Another high school in the county, Ashley Ridge, is fifth.

Other high schools and their rankings thus far are West Ashley, 3; Cane Bay, 4; James Island, 6; Academic Magnet, 7; Goose Creek, 8; First Baptist, 9; and Hanahan, 10.

The Hendrick group, which includes nine local dealerships, is teaming up to promote community stewardship in the Charleston area. A pledge for teenagers not to drink or text and drive, combined with sponsorship of the spirit award, are the first efforts.

General managers and employees of each Hendrick Charleston dealership plan to get involved in stewardship programs year-round in the Lowcountry region. In the first two weeks of the drive, nearly 500 pledges and spirit award votes have been cast.

“We hope to take community stewardship to a whole new level in our hometowns of the Lowcountry,” said Brad Davis, executive general manager of Rick Hendrick Imports.

“Sponsorship is important, certainly, but we want to also engage, educate and create enthusiasm for local causes by asking citizens to join with us to support our community,” he said.

Hendrick Auto Group Charleston consists of six outlets on Savannah Highway — Hendrick Chevy; Rick Hendrick Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep; Hendrick Honda of Charleston; Hendrick Hyundai; Rick Hendrick Imports, which includes BMW, Mini and Volvo; and Lexus of Charleston — and three places on Rivers Avenue including Hendrick Hyundai North; Rick Hendrick Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge of North Charleston; and Rick Hendrick Toyota of North Charleston.

Among the state leaders in clean, fuel efficient vehicle technologies is South Carolina, according to ecology groups and the United Auto Workers union.

The state ranks in the top 15 in the survey. Participating groups are the UAW, Natural Resources Defense Council and National Wildlife Federation.
