VA to choose new clinic site by early 2012 | | The Bulletin

EUGENE — The Veterans Administration hopes to decide by early next year on a site for the long-awaited $40 million medical clinic serving the Eugene-Springfield area.

Kelli Witt, a VA real estate specialist, said she and other VA officials toured potential sites in July, and the selection process will get moving in a few weeks. A developer should be chosen by February.

Congress approved the clinic in 2009. It is expected to employ 200 and will save people from having to travel to Roseburg for treatment.

Developers or landowners would build the 160,000-square-foot structure and lease it to the VA for 20 years.

Witt said she could not divulge the sites being considered, or even how many there are, because that information could push up the price.

Prominent Eugene developers Steve Master, who built Valley River Station across from Valley River Center, and John Musumeci, who built Crescent Village, have been mentioned in real estate circles as contenders for the project. Musumeci has said he is interested. Master has kept quiet.

Potential sites include the RiverRidge Golf Course off North Delta Highway, an area near Lane Community College, and sites on either side of Interstate 5 in the northern part of the metro area.

The only site Witt has publicly eliminated is the former PeaceHealth clinic in Eugene, because of cost issues.

VA started looking for 6-acre sites, but now wants a 13-acre location, Witt said.

U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Springfield, said switching to the larger site limits potential locations, and will create a sprawling project that conflicts with state and city goals for compact urban development.

Witt said the VA needs 13 acres to house an expanded range of services, such as radiology and surgery. She added there are plenty of sites to choose from.

Dr. Alan Cohen, who oversees VA outpatient clinics in Southwest Oregon and is based in Eugene, said no place in the Eugene-Springfield area is out of the question, because it will mean no more long drives to Roseburg.
