Byram philanthropist continues to open his heart
By LYNDSAY CAYETANA BOUCHAL lbouchal@njherald.com Dr. Dan Sorrano is many things: a dentist, a musician, a photographer, a traveler, a father, a pizza maker, and a philanthropist. For the 61-year-old Byram resident and his wife, Carol, helping others is how they like to spend their time. "It's like a hobby," said Carol Sorrano, 61. Dan Sorrano has been practicing general dentistry and orthodontics since 1975 and has spent 35 of those years practicing in Stanhope. At his office, he has been known to help a few patients who couldn't afford necessary dental care and has also taken on a few new clients to give them proper attention, at little to no cost, that they otherwise would not have gotten. His reasoning: "People in pain, that's not nice." From his professional life to his at-home hobbies, Dan Sorrano uses each of his talents to assist others in need. As a young man, the Stanhope dentist played music to help finance his schooling, working as a church organist since the age of 10. Today, he has exchanged the organ for a keyboard, and plays benefit concerts and events with his '50s rock band, The Other White Meat. On Sept. 18, beginning at noon, The Other White Meat and another local band, Brother Flower, will play at Krogh's Brew Pub in Sparta for a fundraising event. The "Dining to Donate" day will benefit Coupons for the Community, a local nonprofit that collects coupons, shops for groceries at a discounted rate, and donates the products to local food banks. Ten percent of all sales that day will be given to the nonprofit organization. Additionally, Dan Sorrano's photography, which he now considers a "semi-profession," has also been used as a tool to help area residents in need of a leg-up. For the last 11 years, Sorrano has turned his travel adventures into timeless beauty, captured through the lens of his camera. He has traveled to exotic locations like Bora Bora, Brazil and the Amazon and documents his findings. Since 2000, the Sorranos have hosted an art and music fund-raiser at local restaurants, featuring his photography as well as three or four other artists' paintings and textile art and 20 other muscians.
