Chrysler recalls 376000 minivans for air bag defect
Chrysler is again recalling more than 367,000 2008 Dodge and Chrysler minivans because the air bags can go off unexpectedly. It's the second recall of the 2008 Chrysler Town and Country, Chrysler Voyager and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans for the same problem.
Those vans were recalled in January because water from the air conditioner could leak onto the electronic chips in the "occupant restraint control module" that controls the air bags. That would set off the airbag light on the dash, Chrysler said, and potentially also cause it to to set off the bags.
At the time, dealers replaced an air conditioner drain grommet to fix the leak. But Chrysler says its engineers have determined that the moisture may have damaged the chip circuit boards in the repaired vans and compromised their performance, so it's recalling them again to inspect and possibly replace them.
Chrysler says its unaware of "any accidents or injuries related to the condition in vehicles that have had the prior recall completed."
"Despite the lack of field reports, we believe it is in the best interest of our customers to replace these modules to ensure the proper functionality of the minivan's advanced safety system," said a statement from David Dillon, head of product investigations and campaigns.
Most of the affected vehicles were sold in the U.S. There are also 50,251 in Canada, 3,748 in Mexico and 13,633 in other countries, Chrysler said.
Recall letter will go out next month, Chrysler said.
