Hyundai i40 Tourer first drive

Launching their new upper medium sector i40 Tourer five door, five seater estate to the motoring media, Hyundai Motor UK came up with a ‘wealth warning’.

A reminder, via the media, to fleet operators, company car drivers and corporate business user-chooser customers that Benefit-in-Kind tax rates increase again from next April.

This means that business customers changing their cars, or indeed the cars they already have, need to think ahead as to what the increase in tax will mean to their future wealth.

As an example Andrew Cullis, Hyundai’s UK marketing director, pointed out that their new i40 Tourer in its very competitive cleanest form, the 1.7 CRDi 115PS BlueDrive with CO2 emissions of just 113g/km will move from a 13 per cent BIK rate to 17 per cent.  The best selling version 136PS version of the same engine with the same BlueDrive trim and equipment with CO2 emissions of 119g/km will go up from 13 to 18 per cent. The new 1.6-litre GDI petrol 135PS unit with CO2 emissions of 140g/km will see BIK tax rise from 18 per cent of the purchase price to 19 per cent.

Equally important to retail and business fleets is VED road tax and these currently start from a competitive Band C which is £0 under the First Year rate and then £30 per annum for the second year onwards. Cullis added that the i40 models also have the lowest insurance group ratings in its sector starting from 12E so that reduces running costs as well.  Competitors include the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia, Honda Accord, Toyota Avensis and Volkswagen Passat.

Hyundai, the South Korean make first introduced to the UK in 1982, is now the fastest growing automotive brand in the UK having gone from 28,000 UK sales in 2008 to 61,752 in 2010 with a target of 65,000 this year.  A raft of new models will see the brand rise to around 100,000 annual sales by 2015.
