One bridge down, one to go
PORTAGE | As Porter County officials christened the recently reopened Lute Road bridge Wednesday morning by cutting a red ribbon stretched across it, work is continuing to replace a second bridge maintained by the county within Portage city limits.
Porter County Highway Department Engineer Ray Riddell said, if all falls into place, the bridge over Willow Creek on Evergreen Avenue should be replaced by year's end.
That should help put an end to traffic troubles in the city the last year that saw three main east/west arterial streets shut down due to construction projects.
Traffic on Stone Avenue has been interrupted for two construction seasons due to the massive stormwater project undertaken by the city. That project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
Lute Road was closed by Porter County last November when it was inspected and deemed no longer safe for travel. The road remained closed to through traffic until July 25 when the project was completed.
The Evergreen Avenue bridge was shut down in March after a inspection found unexpected deterioration. Unlike the Lute Road bridge, no design documents were in place for its replacement, Riddell said.
Heritage Engineering is completing the design work. Riddell expects the project to go out for bid yet this summer with construction on the approximate 40-foot long bridge beginning this fall and being completed by the end of the year. Riddell did not have a cost estimate for the project.
While both the Lute Road and Evergreen Avenue bridges are located within the Portage city limits, state law gives the county responsibility for maintenance of bridges more than 20 feet long.

The 10″MK Diamond blade fits my tile saw and works great! It has the same profile as the last blade I purchased which was 3 times the cost. It appears to have the same diamond content as well. These blades easily convert my used tile saw into a dry cutting cultured stone saw. Just disconnect the water pump and cut away! The dry-cutting blade keeps my stone dry and the flexibility of the 10″ diamond blade on a sliding table tile saw allows me to make intricate cuts. I am thoroughly pleased with this product!
I used this blade on the MK-100 saw to cut concrete based pavers. The turbo type blade is recommended for this application where fine cutting is not required. The design clears dust/gunk from deep cuts quickly making this a good blade for 2+” thick pavers. Worked well for me. The blade cut fast and did not wear quickly. I’d get it again.
