Rotaryfest filled with tasty treats — Some traditional, some definitely not

There was more than just sunshine and good times on the agenda at Rotaryfest Saturday afternoon.

While all the usual summer food favourites, such as barbecue hot dogs, hamburgers and sausages were available from vendors, a number of other foods -- plus a couple unique items -- were also popular at the Rotaryfest Clergue Park grounds after the Community Day Parade.

Dozens of people lined up for jumbo hot dogs, perogies and sausage, Mr. B's Pizza and pulled pork on a bun, which is shredded pork cooked in spicy sauce.

But the real treats for local taste buds were tornado potatoes, funnel cake, bloomin' onions, deep fried dill pickles and deep fried Mars bars.

"We take a Mars bar and then we put this special batter from Mars on, and it turns out exceptionally well. Guaranteed to make your taste buds super happy," said food vendor Rick Homer, who has been in the Sault since Rotaryfest began on Thursday. "People can't get enough of them."

Henry Eklund satisfied his sweet tooth with one of the treats for first time on Saturday.

"It tastes really good. It's all melty and gooey inside with a little bit of crunchiness on the outside," Eklund said after biting into the bar that is served on a stick. "It's nice to try something different."

He said he would definitely eat another one, "But probably not right away."

Steve Demidovich ran a race earlier in the morning before the parade.

"I did the mile today, so this is my treat," Demidovich said smiling as he ate his deep fried bar.

"It's like on a stick with coating on it, a batter and he just dips it. It's pretty neat."

The Sault man didn't think twice when asked if he wanted another one.

"Not right away though. I might wait about an hour."

Another hot item Homer's portable kitchen offered up was funnel cakes, with a variety of sweet toppings.

"You take a pancake-like batter and pour it through a funnel into the grease like a doughnut, and it fries up and interweaves itself into a really nice, I guess you'd call it, artwork," says Marlo Belanger, who works for Homer.

The cakes, which completely fill a paper-size plate, can then be topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries, apples, icing sugar, cinnamon, chocolate or carmel sauce or whipped cream.

"We call it the only food at Rotaryfest that smiles at you before you eat it," Homer says.

Belanger helped serve up tornado potatoes, also known as Saratoga swirls. The potatoes are cut in a spiral cutter and then impaled on 30 cm long stick before they are deep fried.
