Alberta Liberals mobilizing in anticipation of election

As a provincial election could be looming in the near future, the Alberta Liberal Party is mobilizing and canvassing the province to build support. David Swann, the current leader of the official opposition and MLA for Calgary Mountain View was in Peace River earlier this week to meet with supporters, stakeholders and members of the Peace River School Division (PRSD).

"Education, healthcare and water development," Swann said are issues that he heard are important to the Peace Riverites, as well as ones that will resonate with the entire province.

Though Swann has been in politics for seven years, and the official opposition leader for three, he is not putting his name in the hat this time, as he says the party needs somebody with more youth and energy.

"I would like to focus my energy on health care and make sure we get our health system back on track," he said, and confirmed he will still be running again as MLA.

His meeting with the PRSD involved the issue of funding. He cited this as the biggest issue facing school boards in the province.

"Lack of consistent, dependable, committed funding so they can plan properly," Swann said.

"We have been fighting for that for years in the legislature. It's such a basic part of any government responsibility to make sure kids get educated, that they have safe transportation to school, they have real opportunities to learn and contribute to society after they finish."

Specifically he said this could be achieved by tweaking the budget to provide stable, dependable five-year-term funding on a per-student basis, to help school boards predict class sizes, amount of teachers and a maintenance budget. He said rural areas such as those in the Peace Country present a special challenge, though a per-student mode of funding province-wide could alleviate some of the issues.

"You've got a unique district here with a huge area, lots of different groups needing different things from the school system," Swann noted.

In terms of healthcare, Swann said Peace Riverites expressed access to family doctors and long-term care services as issues that need to be looked at.

When it comes to water management, Swann says there are better ways to manage oil companies and drilling needs while conserving fresh water resources.

"Long term thinking and public interest as opposed to private interest and short term thinking," Swann said is critical.
