Prairie View Today: Bittersweet day for Waller County

Today, July 28, marks a bittersweet day for news in Waller County. I say bittersweet because for 121 years the Waller County News Citizen has been the beacon and town crier for the county. I’ve enjoyed the past 15 years as part of this legendary publication and will sorely miss it. On the other hand, this closing of the paper brings another opportunity for others to step up and continue that legacy and we are hopeful that it will be done. My heartfelt thanks to the past editors and staff and especially to Joe Southern and Buckie Wimberly for their untiring dedication and support of the Prairie View Today. My best wishes to all of you as you begin a new chapter in your life.
The 37th annual convention of the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association is now history. On July 20-24, more than 300 alumni and friends of Prairie View A&M University descended on Westin Hotel at Domain in Austin. The conventioneers participated in several workshops, seminars, class meetings, luncheons and other programs, etc.
State Rep. and PVAMU Alumnus James White commended the association for its continued support for the university. He challenged the alumni to be more vigilant in its support and to continue to add value to the historical mission of the university. White said that when the question is asked about the continuation of black colleges, we must show that there is value-added with the PVAMU experiences and the successes of the alumni around the world.
Lt. Colonel and PVAMU alumnus Antoinette Gant joined in the celebration and commended the alumni for staying the course. She reflected on her days on the hill and what it meant to her development as an army officer. Gant recognized the oldest and youngest alumni and thanked them for their continued support for PVAMU.
July 22 was university day and the conventioneers were provided updates on the campus happenings. Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. E. Johanne Thomas-Smith led the team of administrators sharing information. Others included Dr. Michael McFrazier (associate provost and vice president for academic affairs), Dr. Corey Bradford, (vice president and chief financial officer), Dr. Willie F. Trotty (vice president for research and dean of the graduate school), Dr. Felecia Nave (associate provost and assistant vice president for academic affairs), Dr. James Wilson (associate provost and assistant vice president for academic affairs and honors program director), Mr. Fred Washington (vice president for business operations and athletic director) and Mrs. Sheliah Hughes-Reed (executive director for communications).
